Cosmetic Dentistry Q&A

Urban Pacific Dental Associates

What is the Difference Between Cosmetic and General Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry’s primary function is to improve the appearance of a patient’s smile.  Several of the procedures that improve smiles can also improve oral issues like bite or gaps between teeth. Cosmetic treatments correct:

  • The size shape and alignment of teeth
  • Unattractive gaps between teeth
  • Overbites and underbites
  • Discoloration of teeth
  • Broken, decayed, cracked or chipped teeth
  • Missing teeth
  • Old, unattractive dental treatments

What Should I Look For in a Cosmetic Dentist?

When looking for a cosmetic dentist, you should ask for references, and before and after photos of the work to show you the results of his/her work on other patients. This will allow you to see if the work meets your expectations. Your cosmetic dentist should be willing to answer all of your questions and explain the procedures so that you can understand what will be done to achieve the look you desire. You could also ask about the dentist’s continuing education. While all dentists participate in extensive education before they begin to practice, dental techniques and technologies are constantly updated and improved. Check to make sure that your dentist is up to date with current best practices.

How Will I Know What Treatment is Best for Me?

Your dentist will have a detailed conversation with you about what you want to change and how you would like your smile to appear. The condition and health of your teeth will contribute to the decision about the best procedure to meet your needs. Some key questions to discuss with your dentist should include:

  • What will my teeth look like after the treatment?
  • What will my procedure involve?
  • How many visits will be needed?
  • What kind of maintenance will be needed?

Insurance

As a service to our patients, our practice accepts most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional) and PPO out-of-network. We are not part of any managed care network. Our accounting staff will prepare all the necessary forms for your dental benefits. However, we remind you that your specific policy is an agreement between you and your insurance company. Please keep in mind that you are responsible for your total obligation should your insurance benefits result in less coverage than anticipated. Our staff will gladly submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so that you will know what your benefits will be. The fees charged for services rendered to those who are insured are the usual and customary fees charged to all our patients for similar services. Your policy may base its allowances on a fixed fee schedule, which may or may not coincide with our usual fees. You should be aware that different insurance companies vary greatly in the types of coverage available. Also, some companies take care of claims promptly while others delay payment for several months.
